Meet the Maker

Having been born and raised in the heart of the Canadian Priaries, nature and the land around me had great importance. The outdoors became a year round second home. From hiking and camping in the summer, to x-country skiing and ice fishing in the dead of winter, we did it all. Through these adventures I learned the importance of both skill development and reliable gear and equipment.

As my wife and I have been growing our own family, we have done our best to give our children the same kind of experiences and love for nature and the world around us. While planning an excursions into the back country I decided it was time to replace the cheap knives I have been relying on and quickly became frustrated with the quality of many of the options I found. This led me on a months long search that often turned to many hours looking at hand crafted knives and tutorials on the internet. “How hard could that be?” I learned quite quickly just how much goes into it, but it was too late, knife making had it’s hold on me.

My love and appreciation for cooking came later in life as a response to our growing family. We were taught the basics as children but now there was a joy and excitement in it. An exploration of flavors and foods akin to exploring the depths of the woods and prairies around me. Kitchen knives were swiftly explored and added to expand my portfolio with several chef knives finding their way into professional kitchens.

My Philosophy

For several years I have been building the best possible knives I can. Constantly chasing that small improvement over the last one. Rigorously attending to every detail, testing, then testing again. I am not afraid to scrap a project and start over to ensure it is to my standard.

Every made_by_jon knife is designed and built by hand to be an elegant marriage of form and function to last you a lifetime.
