Caring for your knife is simple and easy.

High Carbon Steel Blades

Your high carbon blade can and will rust if given the chance. This should NOT frighten you. As soon as you are done whatever task you need the knife for, wipe it clean, dry it, then store it safely. Over time it will develop a discoloration caused by oxidation. This is called a patina and tells the story of your knife.

Periodic cleaning followed by a coating of food safe oil or wax will go along way to preserving the steel of your blade. Give your kitchen knife a quick clean an wipe down with food safe mineral oil. Or give your outdoor knife a beeswax rubdown after cleaning.

Store your blades safely in a dry place. For extended storage, remove it from the leather or wooden sheath as both will trap moisture in the air.

made_by_jon prefers The Woodsman’s Wax from Maple Made Bucksaws, and treats all knives with it before shipping.

Stainless Steel Blades

Your stainless steel knife is far less prone to rusting or oxidizing, however if given enough time and exposure to moisture it can develop rust as well. The same rules for care apply. As soon as you are done whatever task you need the knife for, wipe it clean, dry it, then store it safely.

Leather Sheath

Your leather sheath has been handcrafted along with the knife to provide it a safe storage place to keep it and yourself safe. The care you give it is just as important as the care you give the knife itself.

Leather can trap moisture against the steel of you blade. It is important to keep it dry whenever possible and clean it as needed. For extended storage remove the knife from the sheath.

Periodically treat the leather with a normal leather conditioning product like Sno Seal, Snow Proof, The Woodsman’s Wax or other wax based treatment.

Wooden Saya

Your wooden saya has been handcrafted along with the knife to provide it a safe storage place to keep it and yourself safe. The care you give it is just as important as the care you give the knife itself.

Wood can trap moisture against the steel of you blade. It is important to keep it dry whenever possible and clean it as needed. For extended storage remove the knife from the saya.

Periodically treat the saya with the same oil you might treat your knife with.

Sharpening

Your knife will come with an extremely sharp edge with the geometry suited to it’s design. It is possible to keep that edge for a long time by ensuring you are cutting on a proper cutting board, not cutting into particularly hard things (such as bone or antler), and stropping the edge.

Learning to sharpen your own knives is a wonderful skill to have, and there are many systems out there than can help give good repeatable results. If you do not wish to sharpen your knife yourself, take it to a professional sharpener you trust. An improperly sharpened knife can be just as dangerous as a dull knife.

Warranty

made_by_jon warranties all knives against manufacturing defects and failures due to the material. We cannot warranty a blade that has been improperly used causing damage. However we can often provide remediation solutions.
